Manipur, Meghalaya &  Tripura becomes full fledged states under North Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act 1971 on 21st January 1972

North Eastern Region ( Reorganisation ) Act 1971

  1. Establishment of the State of Manipur- Earlier it was  Union territory of Manipur
  2. Establishment of the State of Tripura- Earlier it was  Union territory of Tripura
  3. Formation of the State of Meghalaya- Meghalaya was previously part of Assam, but on 21 January 1972, the districts of Khasi, Garo and Jaintia hills became the new state of Meghalaya.

4.  Formation of the Union territory of Mizoram-  Earlier it was Mizo District in the existing State of Assam.

5.  Formation of the Union territory of Arunachal Pradesh- It was territories comprised in the tribal areas specified in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution as a part of Assam.
